Helping dog owners on their next steps to freedom
We understand that it isn't always possible for refuges or temporary accommodation to allow dogs, meaning many owners will not want to move to safety if they can't take their dog with them. Freedom can provide a temporary home for their dog with a loving foster carer until they are safe, settled and ready to have them back.
If you’re supporting someone experiencing domestic abuse, ask if they have any pets in the home and if they need help with temporary fostering. Our professional team are experienced in dog welfare and receive training on understanding the impact of domestic abuse on people and pets.
Steps to making a referral Make a referral
Free
The Freedom service is completely free. We cover the cost of all veterinary treatment, food, and anything else your dog might need while staying with their foster carer, including a collar, lead, toys, treats, poo bags, and a comfy bed.
Confidential
Dogs will be safe with us. We’ll never share client details with anyone, including the foster carer who’s looking after their pet. We always foster dogs a safe distance from where they lived, so they won't be recognised.
Expert support
Our professional, all-female team are experienced in helping people on their journey towards freedom from domestic abuse. We work closely with specialist domestic abuse services, to ensure every owner and dog receives the right support.
Regular updates
We understand how difficult it can be for someone to be away from their dog, especially at a difficult time. While it's not possible for owners to visit their dog, we keep in touch with updates and photos so they can see how their dog is getting on.
You can refer your client to Freedom, safe in the knowledge that we're a specialist service offering support and advice to people moving away from domestic abuse. Our service is free, confidential, and our female-only team have many years of experience supporting survivors and their dogs.
We're a founding member of the Links Pet Fostering Group which means that we've signed up to service standards designed to ensure the safety and support of survivors and their pets.
We can also offer webinars to charities and organisations who support survivors of domestic abuse, covering the connection between pets and domestic abuse, as well as a more in-depth overview of Freedom.
